Nadia Haji Omar

Nadia Haji Omar's paintings and works on paper explore the intersection of language and abstract painting.  Inspired by an ongoing research of scripts that include Sinhalese, Tamil, Arabic, and French, her intricate imagery combines inventive linguistic characters with references to landscape, mapping, and textile patterning.  Haji Omar received a MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2014 and a BA from Bard College.  Her works have been discussed in New York Magazine/Vulture, and Hyperallergic, among other publications, and are included in the collections of the RISD Museum, Providence, RI, the Hallmark Art Collection, Kansas City, MO, and Art in Embassies, US Department of State, Permanent Collection, US Embassy, Colombo, Sri Lanka, among others.

Nadia Haji Omar’s work ش (sh) was one of four paintings constructed with one single Arabic alphabet letter in the center of an endless field of dots and lines. Embedded and camouflaged but still legible, this work seeks to challenge how we read and see both pattern and language. The purpose of the repeated pattern is to lend an aural and vibratory element to the otherwise static background of written text. The alternating direction of some of the dots and lines create an additional interference. The script is visible because it is made up of lines and dots stacked in the opposite direction of the elements around it. Conjuring the body and language simultaneously, I hope to evoke the idea of the necessity of both to validate and enforce one another. The entire painting is made solely of tiny parts, much like our bodies, the natural world and everything in the known universe.
