I-Hsuen Chen
I-Hsuen Chen now works and lives in Taipei and holds an MFA from the Pratt Institute, New York. He is the winner of the Visual Arts Award in the 18th Taishin Arts Award. Starting with photography, Chen employs various approaches, namely, street photography, video installation, and performance, to continuously experiment with the relationship between image creation and different media. Chen’s work has been shown at photo festivals and biennials internationally, including the New York Photo Festival (2012), Singapore International Photography Festival (2014), Taipei Biennial (2016), Lianzhou Foto Festival (2016), JIMEI ARLES International Photography Festival (2016), and Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (2018). He has held solo exhibitions at hpgrp GALLERY NEW YORK, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Bamboo Curtain Studio, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Sea Art Gallery, and Fengjia Museum. Chen’s works are part of the collections of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Cattist Art Foundation.
Based on artist I-Hsuen Chen’s informal photography survey, it is estimated that in Taipei, on average, every ten motorcycles have one torn seat cushion, aptly named “Torn Cushion.” Speaking of torn cushions may evoke feelings of sadness, akin to scars. The larger the scar, the more discomfort riders experience, especially on rainy days when water slowly seeps into their pants. Each tear is like a universe, and every hole is like a black hole. By collecting various torn cushions, the artist seeks to find the most beautiful, humorous, tragic, or even the most ordinary torn cushion, creating what can be termed a “Torn Cushion Catalogue.”
