Bruno Aeberli

Bruno Aeberli (b. 1989, Morges, Switzerland) is a visual artist living and working in Lausanne, Switzerland. He first trained in Photography at the Lausanne University of Arts and Design (ECAL 2013) and then in Visual Arts at the Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD, 2017). Bruno Aeberli's practice is guided by a reflection linked to popular images, their production mechanisms, as well as their memorial and material traces present in Western culture, Dissipation, resurgence, and fetishism are recurrent concepts in his work. In 2017, he received the Prix Coup de Coeur of the AHEAD Foundation and benefited in 2019 from the Canton de Vaud’s artist residency in Paris (France), where he worked for 6 months on new projects. His work has been shown in various artist-run spaces in Switzerland, most recently at Standard/Deluxe (Lausanne) and Maladière Moderne (Lausanne).

Bruno Aeberli explores themes of interiority/exteriority, presence/absence, and the concealment of entities or concepts without complete dissolution, employing shrouds and coverings to convey both physical and metaphorical absence. This interplay is reflected in his two pieces, titled Until the Quiet Comes: the former portrays a mysterious creature obscured by a shroud, evoking a sense of untamed wilderness due to reptilian resemblances, while the latter symbolizes an open window in the American architectural style, suggesting a narrative of previous presence. Both artworks are intended to communicate and unveil fragments of a story or an event that transpired, serving as fragments of personal experiences and introspection, and inviting viewers to contemplate the boundary between reality and fiction. The production process, which entails hand-carving in Switzerland followed by scanning sculpture and then robotic replication in Taiwan, mirrors the concept of metamorphosis and modification.
